Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man/woman could have dreamed would have come his/her way.
Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.
~ William H. Murray, The Scottish Himalayan Expedition (1951), incorporating the words of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Riding two-up also written two up, 2 up or 2-up is the pleasure of being two persons on one motorcycle. The rider (person driving the motorcycle) and the pillion (the passenger sitting behind the rider) travel together filling the designed carrying capacity of a motorcycle (without sidecar).
Important considerations need to be made when riding 2up. From the rider's perspective there is often less room, inevitably more weight and importantly it's not a solo experience. The extra weight has a bearing on the handling and performance of the motorcycle, changes to the setup are important to ensure safe handling and control with a pillion. The motorcycle tyre pressures must be adapted for the extra load, the suspension should also be adjusted if possible and smaller changes such as the headlight tilt, the mirror angles can also be affected. When riding there are several key points that should be observed to ensure both rider and pillion get the most out of the ride.
The pillion should never put their feed downThe pillion should not move around excessivelyIf the pillion needs to move he/she should tell the rider beforehandThe pillion should lean in corners as the rider does, behaving like a backpackThe pillion should hold on with at least one hand at all timesThe rider should always communicate the 'rules' to any new pillion
The rider needs to adapt his/her riding style as well, this is most obvious under breaking but also cornering acceleration and slow speed manouvers.
To enjoy riding 2up as much as possible a little communication goes a long way. Pillions, tell the rider if you are uncomfortable or need to get off to stretch the legs. Rider's are responsible for the comfort and safety of their passenger.
In return pillions must respect the rider and understand some simple rules of motorcycling. Mutual respect goes a long way to making the first ride for both a memorable and enjoyable one.
Why Riding 2up?
Double the fun? or double the trouble?
Motorcycling can be a lot of fun but it can also be difficult especially over long distances. So if it is hard solo wouldn't it be harder with a pillion? Yes and no. Even though there are some restraints like less luggage space, harder to handle on dirt roads, it is an amazing experience and one that is best shared. Any 2up or couples that ride together will know that there is a special bond of trust between the rider and the pillion that simply cannot be replicated in any other way.
Afterall happiness is best shared.
